CHAPTER 8 Tools for Understanding the Challenge

Learning engineering is a repeatable process that starts with a challenge. This chapter introduces practical tools for understanding those learning engineering challenges to be solved by a learning engineering team.

The challenges learning engineers address are focused on helping every targeted learner be successful in reaching learning goals. This might include creating things that help learners make progress toward a goal (for example, refer to the section in Chapter 2 on addressing learners’ zones of proximal development and scaffolding) or things that help targeted learners overcome barriers as illustrated in Figure 8.1.
