Cultivating a project-based approach to your documentary photography gives you an opportunity to explore a concept or subject in a deeper way, or use a series of photographs to share a story or an experience in a more comprehensive manner—something that couldn’t have been conveyed in a single image. It’s easy to shoot a lot of everything and a little of something because life is fascinating and there’s so much to see and share, but I challenge you to find one or more areas of focus. Whether it’s something as broad as dogs (one of Elliott Erwitt’s favorites) or as specific as scenes behind the curtain of an Italian family circus (Beth Rooney’s choice), find something that intrigues or excites you.
