FOLLOWING THE LINE

The Swiss artist Paul Klee (1879–1940) once said, “A line is a dot that went for a walk.” And he was right. Line up an infinite series of tiny points, or dots, to form a line, and they can go in any direction imaginable. A line invites you to follow it.

Lines are used descriptively in language, but the drawn line also has its own visual language—like a code. You can use lines to communicate ideas, motion, symbolic meanings, and senses. They can be drawn to describe something real or abstract. They can also describe surfaces, textures, ...
