Leonardo doesn’t say much about himself in his notebooks. Sometimes he wrote down lists of things he wanted to investigate or reminders of things to do, but he didn’t leave a record of his day-to-day activities or his thoughts about personal matters.

Portraits of Leonardo always show him as an older man. This one was done by his companion Francesco Melzi around 1515—four years before Leonardo died at age sixty-seven. It’s hard to tell with his long hair and beard, but according to those who knew him, Leonardo was extremely handsome as a young man. ...
