On All Hallows’ Eve, October 31, 1517, German Catholic monk and scholar Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, attacking the church, in particular for the practice of selling indulgences—forgiveness of one’s sins. His heretical challenge of church authority launched the Protestant Reformation.
