THE PREVIOUS THREE CHAPTERS introduced the first three levers of organization design: unit structure, diagnostic control systems, and interactive networks. We modeled our approach on the stages followed by an architect designing a building: analyzing existing conditions and topography, laying out the dimensions and shape of the foundation, designing the structures and room dividers, configuring the energy systems and wiring, and ensuring that the traffic flow between rooms achieves the desired results.
