Leaving the Dark Behind

It started with a cheeky suggestion. When I told a friend of mine I was planning to write a new book, he looked at me with an impudent grin on his face. “You ought to include a dark chapter,” he said. “Obviously your readers will expect the book to be all about uplifting stuff, so why don’t you give them a little surprise by adding a chapter about your gloomy personal experiences?”

We had a good laugh about that, and I thanked him for his suggestion. However, I didn’t dismiss his idea altogether. As I was drafting my book, I knew it would be useful for you if I included some of the more painful experiences I had been through in my life.
