The Lay-In The tricky part about drawing a nine-year-old from life is getting the little beast to sit still. I propped Celeste in front of a TV and drew her, life-size, in two sessions of two-and-a-half hours. Sometimes a child can be transfixed by video games, motionless as Mount Rushmore. I believe God will forgive us if we use photos for children. But try to adjust the halftones from life.

1. The face is slightly tilted, so draw an oval with an arced midline. Check the angle of the tilt against the 90-degree vertical of your pencil.
