The generic term “internships” actually includes several other categories, and all—in this Internet age—are turning out to be of historic interest.

Cooperative Education

Cooperative education is a term used to describe educational patterns whereby a student alternates spending one semester at a college or university with one semester in the workplace as an “employee” or “student employee.” Another pattern adopted is for a student to be less than a full-time student and to work part-time with an employer throughout the academic year.

Both patterns have three characteristics:

• A level of interconnection between the academic program and the work in industry,
