Chapter 8. Diffusion Approximation Approach
The diffusion theory [123] has been used in different fields to solve problems requiring an approximate solution for the equation describing light transport in highly scattering media. In tissue optics, it has provided the foundation for several light interaction models aimed at medical applications (Chapter 5). Although the accuracy of the results provided by the diffusion approximation are bound by the optical characteristics of the target material, its amenability to analytic manipulation and relative low computational costs have also motivated its use in computer-intensive applications such as the realistic modeling of material appearance.
