5 Light Propagation in a Dielectric Waveguide
In this chapter we present mathematical models for light propagation within a two-dimensional slab waveguide. First, the conditions necessary for a light wave to propagate within the waveguide are explained. Then we derive the equations for the electric and magnetic field amplitudes of transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes and discuss the properties of the evanescent waves in the media just outside of the waveguide.
