Tone Range
A raw file should give you plenty of scope to adjust the tones any way you want, especially since the sensors in recent cameras are now better than ever and can capture a wide range of tones. Early camera sensors had a more limited dynamic range, which meant it was absolutely critical to get the exposure right (as it was when shooting with transparency film). You have a little more latitude now with the capture exposure settings and can manipulate the detail in the shadows and highlights with much greater ease.
