How you crop a picture can make a huge difference to the way it is viewed and the strength of the composition. Some photographers prefer to crop in camera. Using this approach can be a good discipline, but it limits you to the aspect ratio of the camera frame. It is certainly a good idea to tighten the crop as you shoot, as a common mistake beginners make is to stand too far away from their subject. In my view, though, it is always wise to leave some room at the margins to allow for alternative crops, ones that are not confined to the limits of the camera frame area.
