Using Procedural Textures

Procedural textures are patterns constructed using mathematical algorithms. You use them in the same way that you use any other kind of texture; you simply make a new layer in your Texture Editor or a node in the Node Editor and start from there.

Using procedural textures is not as straightforward as using images as your textures because they have a number of adjustable settings that create different effects. They also require some extra work in terms of applying them to your model in such a way as to prevent the surface from looking overly procedural, and consequently very computer generated and fake.
