The purpose of this chapter is to present and discuss contributions to the analysis of jokes by structural linguists in Europe, and in particular those who are influenced by the theories of structural semantics as developed by Greimas. Algirdas Julien Greimas is an influential linguist/semiotician of a structuralist and post-structuralist orientation.
