10 Humor in Context

This chapter presents and discusses the relationship between jokes 1 and the contexts in which they occur. While the linguistic models dealt with in the previous chapters are primarily essentialist and pay little attention to the context in which jokes occur, the present chapter will focus on the contextual aspects of linguistic humor. Conversation analysis is the field of linguistics best suited for investigating humor in its spontaneous setting—conversation—and for studying its functions and relevance in the process of communication. The review of the literature/discussion in the first section of the chapter introduces all the necessary background information for the reader unfamiliar with conversation analysis.
