Two of the goals of using LinkedIn are to strengthen your existing personal network of friends and colleagues and to expand your network to include new people to see how they might fit into your network, goals, or ambitions. However, the system of contacting people requires some order and decorum (otherwise, nobody would feel comfortable signing up for the site in the first place). Therefore, LinkedIn offers a way to communicate with your existing network that is integrated with a way to meet and connect with people outside your immediate network: LinkedIn messages and InMail. Not so coincidentally, I cover those concepts in this chapter.
You use LinkedIn messages to contact a friend about anything, from a simple congratulations on a work anniversary to a request for a favor for you or a friend. InMail enables you to directly communicate with anyone in the LinkedIn network through a private LinkedIn message. I also cover what to do when you get a request from a connection on LinkedIn.
