Linux and X Windows
We've already said that Linux uses X Windows, or X11, as its low-level GUI system. The current X Windows release is 6. It is a client-server design that allows thin clients and network computers to serve a user interface to a remote application. Figure 8-5 shows how the application and its presentation display may reside in either the same machine or in separate machines. X Windows was designed as client-server architecture at its inception, unlike the WIN32 graphics services of Microsoft Windows. This makes it relatively easy to remote an X Windows GUI in a good-performing fashion, security issues aside.
