Network configuration is relatively simple. The forms are straightforward and give the required information; information entry is no problem. That does not guarantee that things will work. In this section, we will discuss a number of different failures and how to recognize and correct them. Before we start, let's talk about the basic tools required to detect and recognize failures.

The tools we discuss are command-line tools common to the UNIX and Linux environments. Since TCP/IP was first implemented on UNIX and its continuing development has been UNIX-based, the tools for analyzing TCP/IP are generally command-line tools.
