In this chapter we introduce the Common Internet File System (CIFS) file sharing protocol and the mechanics of using it on Windows. Next, we show how Samba can be used to perform most of the same functions that a Windows file server can perform. We show how to install Samba and to configure it. Finally, we talk about Network File System (NFS) and how to install and configure NFS on Linux.
