Linux with OpenLDAP
The OpenLDAP organization provides a free open-source reference LDAP implementation that we will host at Elsolutions on Linux. The directory daemon is called slapd. The replication daemon is called slurpd.
Elsolutions could choose to use the Windows XP LDAP server, but the over all philosophy, when given a choice, is to use Linux server solutions to avoid possible vendor lock-in and to avoid licensing fees.
Red Hat Linux 7 delivers OpenLDAP. We selected it during installation of the machines that would become our LDAP replicas at Elsolutions. Consult man page ldap(3), which is the root of most of the OpenLDAP commands. Setting up OpenLDAP requires editing /etc/openldap/slapd.conf, as root. Its contents should not be visible ...
