Organizations

There are two important organizations that relate to Web servers: The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Apache Software Foundation (ASF).

World Wide Web Consortium

The slogan of the W3C is “Leading the Web to Its Full Potential.” The W3C consists of about 450 companies that participate in promoting interoperable standards for the Web. IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Microsoft are members. Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, founded the W3C in 1994 at MIT with the collaboration of CERN (the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire—the European Laboratory for Particle Physics), where the Web originated.
