Special Function Distributions

In addition to the many general-purpose distributions such as Red Hat, Slackware, SuSE, or Debian GNU/Linux, there are hundreds of special purpose Linux distributions.

Some distributions, such as EnGarde Linux or Immunix, focus on security, while others focus on smaller, special needs such as Beowulf clusters or “real time” scheduling. Of particular interest when setting up a router are the Linux routing distributions that take advantage of Linux’s networking strengths and add simplified configuration options.
