A major international bank was interviewing short-listed candidates for the role of Chief Operating Officer. For the first time in years, the bank had decided it needed to look outside for suitable candidates. Towards the end of the discussions, the Human Resources Director asked candidates if they would seek support from an executive coach if they were appointed. She said afterwards: “If they said no, I vetoed the candidate because I knew they lacked the self-awareness required for this job. Anyone coming in at that level to the organisation has a lot to learn and needs all the help they can get.”
