The good news was Pete and I had figured out exactly what we wanted to do: make (legal) moonshine. The bad news was nobody else seemed to think this was a good idea—at all. Bear in mind, this was 2010. Up until about 2009, there had never really been a “legally” produced moonshine available in liquor stores, and it’s a federal offense to produce moonshine at home, even if it’s for your own consumption. When the recession hit and states figured out that relaxing the laws regulating distilleries would both create jobs and increase tax revenue, moonshine began making its way into mainstream culture.
