Basic LAN Components

Some basic terminology is needed before getting started on the in-depth study of LAN technology and protocols. The subsections that follow describe the most fundamental LAN components: stations, LAN media, network interface cards, and device drivers.

Chapter 3, "Ethernet LAN Structure," describes other essential network equipment, including repeaters, hubs, bridges, switches, and routers.

Stations and DTEs

Systems that can originate and receive frames are called stations. Stations include client and server computers that exchange data with one another, as well as routers that forward data out of a LAN and transmit data into a LAN.
