Many of today's LANs contain hundreds—or thousands—of systems. Network management facilities are needed to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot a LAN.
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is the most widely implemented network management technology. The capability to participate in SNMP is built into virtually every networked device. A SNMP network management station can communicate with any device that has been SNMP-enabled.
SNMP originally was created to introduce network management functions into the Internet. It was designed by an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) committee; the IETF organization is responsible for developing Internet standards.
