Tabulation of Important Ethernet Parameters
See Table 4.2 summarizes the official Ethernet MAC parameters defined for 1Mbps, 10Mbps, 100Mbps, and 1000Mbps Ethernet.
Note that most of the parameters are the same across all speeds. The interframe gap is the same when it is expressed in bit times. The only exceptional para-meter is the Gigabit Ethernet slot time. Recall that this would be relevant only if CSMA/CD Gigabit transmission were used.
Parameter | 1Mbps | 10Mbps | 100Mbps | 1000Mbps |
---|---|---|---|---|
slotTime | 512 bit times | 512 bit times | 512 bit times | 4096 bit times |
interFrameGap | 96s | 9.6s | 96s | 096s |
attemptLimit | 16 | 16 | 16 | 16 |
backoffLimit | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
jamSize | 4 bytes | 4 bytes | 4 bytes | 4 bytes |
maxFrameSize (without VLAN header) | 1518 bytes | 1518 bytes | 1518 bytes | 1518 bytes ... |
