1000BASE-X Technology

As was the case for 100Mbps Ethernet, an existing transmission technology was reused to speed the development of Gigabit Ethernet. The encoding and the transmission methods already in use for fibre channel technology were adopted for the three 1000BASE-X implementations (100BASE-LX, 100BASE-SX, and 100BASE-CX). This made it possible to reuse existing physical components and helped vendors roll out products quickly.

The sections that follow discuss the encoding method, transmission mechanisms, and connectors for the three 1000BASE-X implementations. 1000BASE-T has very different features and will be described at the end of the chapter.
