The process of urbanization in our country is going on at an accelerated pace. The urban population, which was 5 crores in 1947, has increased to 28.5 crores according to the 2001 census, and the number of cities with a population of more than one million (ten lakhs) has gone up from 12 in 1981 to 40 in the year 2001. During 1990, the 218 Class-I cities (with a population of more than one lakh) accounted for more than 60 per cent of the total urban population of the country.
