Anyone using mains-operated luminaires should have an awareness of how to use mains supplies safely. This chapter discuss the important features of electrical mains supplies, safety and installation.

Domestic Premises

The normal mains supply to domestic premises is a single phase alternating voltage (Figure 12.1 and Table 12.1). The quoted mains supply is normally the r.m.s value (root, mean, square value). This is based on calculating the average heating effect over one halfcycle of the mains waveform. The r.m.s value is the equivalent direct voltage to give the same heating effect and is sometimes referred to as the effective value. For a sine wave, the r.m.s value is 0.7 × ...
