7.3 Additional installations for the Core server
The information in this section applies to the Core server only. The additional
components are required for database connection, Web server, and assessment
functionality.
7.3.1 Internet Information Services
Internet Information Services (IIS) provides the Web server used by the
LearningSpace Core and (potentially) content servers. Install IIS only after the
most recent service pack and security fixes have been applied. Immediately after
installing IIS, run Windows Update (see “Windows Update” on page 95), and
apply all recommended security patches. After you install IIS, make sure that it
runs correctly by accessing the server from a Web browser on another machine.
Installing IIS for LearningSpace (Windows 2000)
IIS for Windows 2000 is packaged as part of the operating system. During the
installation of Windows 2000, IIS is selected by default, but should be deselected
for security reasons. To install IIS, follow these steps:
1. Select Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
2. Select Add / Remove Programs.
3. Click the button Add / Remove Windows Components.
4. Click the check box next to Indexing Service and Internet Information
Services (IIS).
5. Highlight Internet Information Services (IIS) by clicking on it (see Figure 7-2
on page 84).

6. Click Details.
7. Make sure to select only the following components from the details list
(Figure 7-3 on page 85):
–Common Files
File Transfer (FTP) Protocol
Internet Information Services Snap In
World Wide Web Server

8. Click OK, then Next.
9. When prompted, place the Windows 2000 Server CD into the CD-ROM Drive.
10.Immediately after installing IIS, open Microsoft Windows Update (see
“Windows Update” on page 95) and install the Critical Updates Package.
Make sure that the IIS Security Rollup Package is selected.
IIS For LearningSpace (Windows NT 4.0)
IIS for Windows NT 4.0 is part of the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
This CD should be shipped with your server software, or you can download it
from Microsoft’s Web site (http://www.microsoft.com).
1. From the Root directory of the CD, run setup.exe.
2. If you receive the warning shown in Figure 7-4 on page 86, click Yes to
proceed.

3. Click Next on the option pack setup screen.
4. Click Accept on the End User License Agreement.
5. Click Custom on the following screen.
6. Select the following components (see Figure 7-5 on page 87):
Internet Information Services (IIS)
Microsoft Data Access Components 1.5
Microsoft Index Server
Microsoft Management Console
NT Option Pack Common Files
Transaction Server

7. Highlight Microsoft Index Server and click Show Subcomponents.
8. Remove Sample Files and Online Documentation. Click OK (see Figure 7-6
on page 88).
