17.1 Server maintenance plan
To ensure proper LearningSpace maintenance and reliability, you should have a
server maintenance plan. It should include information about the maintenance
and disaster recovery of the LearningSpace server machines. It should include at
least the following information:
1. Reinstallation plan: Written steps, LearningSpace CD, and a list of all other
system software needed (including all system software, option packs,
upgrades, and so on).
2. List of DSN information for relevant databases.
3. List of IP Addresses and/or Domain names for all server machines.
4. Backup plan for the database(s) and content.
5. Disk space growth plan.
Allow approximately 1 MB per user. However, this value depends greatly
upon what database is being used and how much progress and item level
information is tracked per user.
6. Procedure for shutting down the system.
Both technical and administrative (for notifying students).
7. Listing of trusted individuals outside the IT Department that can make server
changes or make requests of IT.
8. Procedure for inspecting the NT Event Log for problems on a per server
basis. LearningSpace Core will write to this log and flag errors that may be
useful in troubleshooting or preempting problems.
9. Procedure for saving NT event logs.
10.Data archival planning.
11.Plan or procedure for logging changes made to the server, including
information about when a server was rebooted and a statement about the
reason for changing the state of any server.
12.Suggested LearningSpace server restart sequence.
13.Definition of the roles and responsibilities of the players involved in the
LearningSpace deployment.
