APPROACHES TO CLUTTER MODELING

4.1 INTRODUCTION

The historical technical literature on low-angle land clutter includes a number of different past approaches for attempting to model this complex phenomenon, as reviewed in Chapter 1. Thus, most simply, low-angle clutter has been characterized as a single-variable characteristic or functional relationship between the dependent variable σ° and any one of the following three independent variables: (1) illumination angle to the backscattering terrain point; (2) radar carrier frequency; and (3) range to the backscattering terrain point.
