A Resilient Energy Union with a Forward-looking Climate Change Policy is the third (out of 10) key Juncker Commission priorities. This emblematic policy area builds on several realities, especially the European Union’s (EU) heavy dependence from fossil fuels and the EU leadership in the fight against climate change.
More than half of the EU energy supply is covered by third-country imports. Most recent figures show that the EU imports 90% of crude oil and 66% of natural gas, largely from Russian and Middle Eastern producers.
