Chapter 2

Technologies for Short-Term Applications

Abstract

For short-term applications, water treatment technologies usually need to be implemented with short notice, such as in humanitarian assistance/disaster relief (HA/DR) scenarios following natural disasters or in United Nations-operated refugee camps during wars. The main concern during short term emergency response is to reduce mortality rates. As a result, energy is not considered a constraint. In addition, water can come from any reasonable source. For example, if the HA/DR site is located on a coast, sea water is desalinated on board ships then transported to consumption centers. Shipboard power systems or auxiliary generators are used to power the water treatment units.
