When developing your music collection, the first question to ask is what sort of music your station will collect. Straightforward though it seems, it requires two responses. First, will you collect all genres of music or will you have a specific focus? At WXOX, we cast as wide a net as possible to accommodate the diverse interests of our DJs, but your station may want to specialize in a particular genre such as jazz, classical, or punk rock.

Next, you will need to ask which format you will collect this music on. Some stations simply keep a digital archive on their station computer while others house records, CDs, and tapes. Invariably, the answer to this question will depend on how much space you have to give it.
