Radio Link Control Functions

The radio link control sublayer is located between PDCP and MAC sublayers. The RLC sublayer is responsible for transferring upper layer PDUs generated by RRC or PDCP sublayers. The RLC sublayer can operate in one of the three modes of operation defined as transparent mode, unacknowledged mode, and acknowledged mode. Depending on the mode of operation, the RLC entity controls the usage of error correction, concatenation, segmentation, re-segmentation, duplicate detection, and in-sequence delivery of service data units. Other functions of RLC sublayer include protocol error detection, recovery and SDU discarding.
