6.1 Chapter Overview

Many M2M applications use public telecommunications networks to transfer data from M2M devices to an M2M server. These telecommunications networks will have to be adapted to cope with the traffic generated by the projected growth of M2M applications. In the near future, many more devices will be connected to the existing networks, as more and more M2M applications are introduced. These M2M devices will have a very different effect on the telecommunications network compared to human-oriented devices. This chapter introduces the effects that M2M has on public telecommunications infrastructures and describes some of the methods that network operators will use to optimize their networks for M2M communications.

The telecommunications networks will provide the data communications and associated value-added services to the M2M applications. Note that, with M2M service-level offerings, telecommunications operators seek to provide more than simple M2M data communications. Some operators even provide complete home-security services on the basis of M2M. However, in this chapter we will limit ourselves to the data communications part of M2M communications.

The focus in this chapter is on M2M in mobile networks. For M2M application owners, mobile networks are often more suitable as they offer better possibilities for controlling the ...
