Modem Connections
You can also use a modem and a standard telephone line to connect to other computers. A modem is a hardware device that is either inside your computer (an internal modem) or connected to one of your computer's serial or USB ports (an external modem). You configure a modem connection with the Modem control panel.
Having a modem isn't enough to connect to another computer. You also need telecommunications software. The software you use depends on the type of system you are connecting to. For example, to connect to a friend's computer, you could use a general-purpose program like ZTerm; to connect to an online service like America Online, you would use the freely distributable America Online client software.
