Remote Access

Remote Access is telecommunications software that's part of Mac OS 9.1. It has two main functions:

  • Use it to connect to Apple Remote Access (ARA) servers—or Mac OS 9.1 computers with Remote Access privileges enabled—to access network volumes. I tell you how on the following pages.

  • Use it to connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) via PPP. I tell you how in Chapter 11.

Tip

Mac OS 9.1 comes with a special "personal server" version of ARA. I explain how to enable Remote Access file sharing features earlier in this chapter.

Tip

The Remote Access control panel replaces the PPP control panel found in versions of Mac OS prior to 8.5.
