What Do the Individual Preferences Panels Do?

I’ll now take you through the four System Preferences categories and give you an idea of what each panel is used for. I’ll also provide a cross-reference between Windows 98 control panels and the equivalent System Preferences panels in Mac OS X.

Personal preferences

These panels control the Mac OS X look and feel, which is called “Aqua.” And these settings really are personal—each user with an account on the Mac can set these however he or she chooses, and the settings will only be in effect when that person is logged in and using the machine (Figure 6.18).
