iChat

Jaguar’s built-in iChat instant-messaging (IM) program marks the beginning of what could become a close relationship between Apple and America Online. iChat is the first outside client software that AOL has licensed to use its instant-messaging network. That gives iChat users immediate access to 150 million AOL Instant Messaging users as well as .Mac users (Figure 7.25). You can also use iChat to join any AOL chat room just by entering its name, but since iChat can’t give you a list of names, this feature looks better on paper than it works on your screen. My recommendation: Use real AOL software if you want AOL chat rooms.
