The focus of this brief chapter is a look at the history of Mac OS X and an overview of the ups and downs of troubleshooting the OS.

In previous editions of Mac OS X Help Line, this chapter began with an explanation of why Apple decided to move from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. Mac OS X was not merely an incremental change in the Mac OS; it was more like a quantum leap. It was essentially an entirely new operating system. So an explanation of the rationale for such a radical change seemed important.
