The majority of the Unix software you'll find that hasn't been specifically made for Mac OS X is created by other users just like you. Some of them are professional programmers, but the vast majority of them are simply hobbyists who've put together an application because they wanted a program that did something, and they've made it available for you to install out of the sense of team spirit that pervades the Unix and open source communities.
