To transfer data across the network, your servers and clients use protocols—standardized ways of communicating. During setup, Mac OS X Server automatically starts enough protocols to get your network going, so you can start connecting Macs to it immediately. After that, though, you may need to run other protocols to enable other types of clients to communicate with the servers; and you may need to configure the protocols that are already running.
