All work and no play makes a Mac a dull toy. Fortunately, Mac OS X offers plenty of opportunity for entertainment, including watching digital movies and DVDs. In this chapter, we explore QuickTime and DVD Player, two of Mac OS X’s applications for playing digital video and DVD media.

Playing and Recording Digital Video with QuickTime

Apple’s QuickTime is the technology your Mac uses to display and manipulate audio/visual media. Everything from playing simple beeps to surround-sound encoded HD movies is handled by QuickTime. Without QuickTime, using OS X Lion wouldn’t be nearly as interesting as it is, and your ability to experience all the video options on the Internet would be seriously hampered.
