active window
The active window is the one that is in front of everything else and is selected. You can tell if a window is active because the three little buttons in the top-left corner are in color, and the title bar icon is not dimmed. It’s important to become aware at all times of which window is active because that is the window that will accept any command. For instance, if you press Command Shift N to create a new folder, that new folder will appear in the active Finder window (or on the Desktop, if the Desktop is active).
