A Note on Windows Client Support

Although Windows users can access shared folders and files in Lion Server, there are features that were previously supported in Mac OS X Server (via Server Admin) that are no longer supported. If you have Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8, you can use it in concert with Lion Server to support Windows. Here are some features not supported in Lion Server:

  • Primary Domain Controller: Enables Windows clients to authenticate directly to the Mac server. Snow Leopard Server stores the user and group information for the Windows clients, and it hosts user profiles and network home folders. Working as a Backup Domain Controller, also supported in Snow Leopard Server, is not supported in Lion Server.
  • Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS): Enables Windows clients to find Windows servers and other Windows clients across multiple subnets. WINS resolves the Windows network computer names (called NetBIOS names) to IP addresses.
  • Windows domain browsing: Enables Windows clients to browse for Windows servers across subnets. Snow Leopard Server makes itself appear to be a Windows server to Windows clients.
  • Domain login: Enables Windows users to log in with the same username, password, roaming profile, and network home folder on any Windows (or Lion Server) computer that can log in to a Windows domain.
