access point A networking device that enables two or more Macs to connect over a wireless network.

ad hoc wireless network See computer-to-computer wireless network.

AirPlay A wireless technology that enables you to stream your MacBook Air screen to an Apple TV device and then see the screen on a TV or projector.

alert A notification message that pops up on the MacBook Air screen and must be dealt with before you can resume what you were doing.

badge A small red icon that appears in the upper-right corner of an app icon to let you know that some new activity or data awaits you.

Bluetooth A wireless networking technology that enables you to exchange data between two devices using radio frequencies when the devices are within range of each other (usually within about 10 meters).

Bonjour An Apple technology that scours the local network looking for other computers and devices that provide services and then configures those services without requiring any input from you.

bookmark An Internet site saved in Safari so that you can access the site quickly in future browsing sessions.

central processing unit See CPU.

cloud A collection of remote, networked servers that can store data and run applications. Apple uses a collection of icloud.com networked servers to store your iCloud data and push any new data to your MacBook Air, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Windows PC.
